5-4-3-2-1 Calming Technique. This is a universal technique, inspired by the field of Mindfulness.

Area: Trauma (trauma, suicide risk and challenging behaviors)

This technique could be used for Training purposes, in order to facilitate the understanding of trauma and how to relieve the “pain”. For the purposes of a training activity, you can use the Role playing and ask from the learners to use the technique to one another. This will bring to the table a lot of queries and will promote group discussion. From a Theoretical point of view, the demonstration of this technique to the learners will promote the understanding around trauma, post-traumatic stress and the discomfort these may cause to the individual.

  • General comment by reviewer

This tool can be used for anxiety, as well as for comforting people who experience trauma and post-traumatic stress distress. The tool, therefore, can be utilized, in order to introduce the learner on being aware on how to respond in situations where people experience trauma and stress, as well as on how to comfort and relieve the distress of individuals who have experienced trauma. Moreover, this tool is made for people who have experience trauma and who, in consequence, face distressed and anxious due to this experience. Keep in mind that this technique is based on Mindfulness and requires people to focus on their own selves and bodies, something that for some people may be difficult in the beginning and may cause stress and discomfort. Therefore, the learners should keep that in mind, in order to avoid putting pressure on the individuals.
